Home Style Savvy? Lake Martin Area Homes

We've all been watching HGTV and have heard them describe homes with the terms colonial, cape cod, ranch, etc. But do you really know what that means?

Well today you will finally find out!

Let's start with the most common:

RANCH

A ranch style home is typically one story with
horizontal orientation. It has a hipped or gabled
roof with deeply set eaves, is rectangular, L, or U shaped, has an attached garage, and has no elaborate ornamentation.

CRAFTSMAN

A craftsman style home has a front porch only. It will have visible rafter tails and exposed beams under the roof overhang. This type of home will also have a partially paned door, tapered columns, a shallow sloping gabled roof, multi-pane windows and a natural color scheme.

21st CENTURY MODERN

The 21st Century Modern style home has a natural backdrop. Will most likely have exposed steel, wide windows, straight lines and have a moderately symmetrical layout. It will have minimalistic decor and will have simple, clean, geometric forms.

A -FRAME

An A-Frame style home will have front and rear gables that dominate the building structure. It will have a very steep sloping roof with deep set eaves. Large windows will span the front and back gables. It will have minimal wall surfaces that are vertical.

COLONIAL REVIVAL

A colonial revival style home has doors framed with decorative pediment and pillasters. It's door is centered and aligned with multi-pane windows. It is typically rectangular in shape and has a gable or hip roof with a slight overhang. The door is usually paneled and the exterior of these homes are brick, wood, or clapboard. The front porch is usually lighted with a single chain pendant light.

QUEEN ANNE

The Queen Anne style home has cross-gables and a steeply sloped roof. It is especially ornamented using all surfaces as decorative elements. It has witches hat turrets, wrapped porches, and fish scale siding.

SPANISH REVIVAL OR MEDITERRANEAN

The Mediterranean style home has arched windows, doors, and hallway entrances. It's exterior is white stucco and has a hipped or gabled roof with a wide overhang. It has terracotta roof tiles, balconies, and decorative ironwork.

GREEK REVIVAL

The Greek Revival home is usually painted white to resemble marble. It will usually be gabled in the front with double hung windows. It will have round, square, or octagonal  pillasters. No bases are on the columns and the door is elaborately framed. There is a wide band of trim on the cornice line.

ITALIANATE

The Italianate home is rectangular in shape. It's eaves have a deep overhang supported by decorative brackets. It has a brick or stucco exterior, and tall and rounded windows with the first story windows being taller than the second. The windows are also substantially framed, hooded, or pedimented. Sometimes there is a square tower centrally placed on the roof.
